2007 HALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES

 DICK CLOSE

Dick Close is a 1960 graduate of Bethany High School. He has spent many hours of volunteering, promoting and casting the vision for the BHS Alumni Association. He has organized and personally contributed to the funding of the events that are sponsored by the BHS Alumni Association.

Dick is the individual that is responsible for the "Hall of Honor". He is probably Bethany's number one fan! Any activity you go to you will ususally see Dick Close there. His leadership of the Alumni Association has brought the alumni out of the dark. More and more people are getting involved in the activites of the alumni.

There is no person who promotes Bethany Public Schools more than Dick Close. Dick bleeds purple and white! He loves Bethany Schools and has excitement about our school district that is catching. Dick has been a great president of the Alumni Association and continues to amaze us with his creative ideas to bring the past hand-in-hand with the future.

 GERALD F. DICKERSON

Gerald Dickerson came to Bethany Schools in July 1977 where he served as high school principal for two years. He became the Superintendent of Bethany Schools in February 1979 and served until June 1997.

Mr. Dickerson was known by everyone as Mr. "D". During the 18 years he served as Superintendent, the district enrollment increased by 25%. He saw the district through a fire that destroyed the Administrative Building and part of the elementary wing. From the ashes of the elementary school, the district, with Mr. D's leadership began an ambitious rebuilding program. During the next 15 years, the east wing of the elementary was replaced, a new middle school was started, and a new high school was built. These buildings were built in the days before "creative" financing was available for schools.

Mr. Dickerson was a positive professional and strong supporter of the students, faculty, staff and community. He was chosen by his peers to be Oklahoma Superintendent of the Year and following his retirement was inducted into the Oklahoma Education Hall of Fame. We honor him for twenty years of dedicated and loyal service to Bethany Public Schools.

 JAY GRIFFIS

Jay Griffis served as an English teacher and coach, counselor, the first Middle School Principal at Bethany, and High School Principal and Director of Secondary Education. He currently serves as part time counselor to the Alternative Education Program.

Very few people have contributed to our school as much as Jay Griffis. Jay never asked to be promoted but when the job called for a person of character, enthusiasm and leadership, he was never overlooked.

Jay is people oriented and is loved by staff and students alike. He is personable, kind, highly motivated, and loyal to the school and others. I think of Jay as a Christian "Servant Leader" which is a model for all. Jay has been a major factor in the growth and success of Bethany Public Schools.
